What Is Anal Fissure?

An anal fissure is a small tear in the lining of the anal canal. It causes sharp, severe pain during and after bowel movements, along with bright red bleeding. Acute fissures last less than 6 weeks; chronic fissures persist beyond 6 weeks and require surgical treatment.

SurgiKure treats chronic fissures with Lateral Internal Sphincterotomy (LIS) — a procedure that cuts a small portion of the internal anal sphincter to reduce spasm, restore blood flow, and allow permanent healing. Laser-assisted LIS achieves a 95%+ success rate with minimal post-operative discomfort.

Common Symptoms

Sharp burning pain during bowel movementsPain lasting 1-2 hours after passing stoolsBright red blood on toilet paperVisible tear in skin near the anusItching or irritation in the anal areaSphincter spasm causing further painFear of bowel movements due to pain

Types & Grades

Acute Fissure

A fresh tear less than 6 weeks old. Treated with stool softeners, topical GTN or diltiazem cream, and sitz baths. Often heals without surgery.

Chronic Fissure

Persists more than 6 weeks, often with a sentinel pile and skin tag. Requires Lateral Internal Sphincterotomy (LIS) for permanent cure.

Recurrent Fissure

Fissure that returns after prior treatment. Requires specialist evaluation and laser-assisted sphincterotomy.

Treatment Options

1

Laser-Assisted LIS

Gold standard. Laser energy precisely cuts the internal sphincter fibres, reducing spasm and restoring blood flow. Day-care procedure, 95%+ success rate, minimal post-operative pain.

2

Conventional LIS

A small surgical cut releases the internal sphincter under anaesthesia. Highly effective. Minimal incision with fast recovery of 2-3 days.

3

Botulinum Toxin (Botox) Injection

Botox is injected into the sphincter to temporarily relax the muscle and allow healing. Effective for 3-6 months; suitable for patients preferring non-surgical options.

4

Topical Therapy

GTN cream or diltiazem gel reduces sphincter pressure and promotes blood flow. First-line treatment for acute and mild chronic fissures.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does fissure surgery take?
LIS is a 15-30 minute day-care procedure under local or general anaesthesia. Patients go home the same day.
Will I have incontinence after LIS?
Risk of incontinence after laser LIS is extremely low — under 1% — when performed by an experienced proctologist.
Can chronic fissures heal without surgery?
Chronic fissures lasting more than 6 weeks rarely heal with topical treatment alone. LIS is the most effective treatment.
Is fissure surgery covered by insurance?
Yes. Lateral Internal Sphincterotomy is covered by most health insurance policies. SurgiKure manages all cashless claims.
