A varicocele is an enlargement of the veins within the scrotum — similar to varicose veins in the legs. These veins (the pampiniform venous plexus) carry oxygen-depleted blood away from the testicles. When they become enlarged, blood pools in the scrotum, raising testicular temperature and impairing sperm production and quality.
Varicoceles affect approximately 15% of all men and 40% of men investigated for infertility. They are most commonly found on the left side.
