What Is a Sebaceous Cyst?

A sebaceous cyst (also called an epidermal or epidermoid cyst) is a non-cancerous, dome-shaped lump that forms beneath the skin from a blocked or damaged sebaceous (oil) gland or hair follicle. It contains keratin — a whitish, paste-like protein — and may have a small central pore (punctum) visible on the surface. Common sites include the face, scalp, neck, back, and chest.

Sebaceous cysts are benign and not dangerous, but they can grow slowly over time, become infected or rupture, or cause cosmetic distress. The only definitive treatment is complete surgical excision — removing the entire cyst along with its wall (capsule). Leaving the capsule behind guarantees recurrence. SurgiKure performs complete excision under local anaesthesia as a quick same-day procedure.

Common Symptoms

A smooth, round, dome-shaped bump under the skinA small central pore or dark spot (punctum) on the surfaceFreely movable lump that does not feel attached to underlying structuresWhite or yellowish cheesy or paste-like discharge if squeezed or rupturedPain, redness, and swelling if the cyst becomes infectedSlow, gradual increase in size over months to yearsMost common on the face, scalp, neck, chest, and back

Types & Grades

Simple Uninfected Cyst

Smooth, intact, asymptomatic cyst. Complete excision under local anaesthesia removes the cyst and capsule in one step. No recurrence.

Inflamed Cyst (Non-infected)

Cyst is inflamed but not infected. Anti-inflammatory treatment first; elective complete excision planned after inflammation settles in 2-4 weeks.

Infected Cyst / Abscess

Cyst has become a painful, pus-filled abscess. Drainage under local anaesthesia first to resolve the acute infection; complete surgical excision 4-6 weeks later for definitive cure.

Sebaceous Cyst Treatment Options

1

Complete Surgical Excision

Gold standard and only permanent cure. An elliptical skin incision is made around the cyst and the entire cyst — including its wall (capsule) — is removed intact. No capsule left behind means no recurrence. Local anaesthesia, 15-30 minute procedure, same-day.

2

Minimal Excision (Punch Technique)

A 2-4 mm punch biopsy tool creates a small opening; the cyst contents are expressed and the collapsed capsule is pulled out through the tiny hole. Smaller scar but technically more challenging. Suitable for non-inflamed, non-ruptured cysts.

3

Incision and Drainage (I&D)

Used only for infected/abscessed cysts to provide immediate pain relief. The abscess is drained under local anaesthesia. This is NOT a cure — it is a temporary measure. Complete excision must follow 4-6 weeks later.

4

Laser Excision

A laser creates the incision and removes the cyst, providing precise tissue cutting with minimal bleeding. Suitable for cysts in cosmetically sensitive areas like the face.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will sebaceous cyst recur after surgery?
After complete excision of the entire cyst capsule, recurrence is extremely rare (under 1%). Incomplete removal — such as simple drainage — leads to guaranteed recurrence.
Should I squeeze or pop a sebaceous cyst?
No. Squeezing a cyst does not remove it, often introduces infection, and makes complete surgical removal more difficult later. Always seek medical evaluation.
Is sebaceous cyst removal painful?
The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia. There is no pain during the excision. Mild tenderness at the incision site for 1-2 days afterwards is normal.
Is sebaceous cyst removal covered by insurance?
Symptomatic, infected, or rapidly growing cysts are typically covered by most health insurance policies. Purely cosmetic removal of asymptomatic cysts may not be covered.
